Swapnadal brings 1st-ever mimodrama ‘Macbeth’ today

Theatre troupe Swapnadal will stage the first-ever full-length mimodrama ‘Macbeth’ today marking the 15th death anniversary of eminent playwright Selim Al Deen as part of the ‘Natyacharya Selim Al Deen Smaranotshav 2023’.

The 18th production of Swapnadal will be staged at the experimental theatre hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. They dedicated this play to Natyacharja Selim Al Deen.

Dramatist and theatre personality M Hamid will inaugurate the ‘Natyacharya Selim Al Deen Smaranotshav. Theatre researcher Dr Bulbul Biswas and Professor of the Department of Drama & Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University Dr Esrafil Ahmed will be also present at the event.

‘Macbeth’ will be staged twice on the day. The story of the play goes as three witches tell the Scottish general Macbeth that he will be King of Scotland. Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth kills the king, becomes the new king, and kills more people out of paranoia. Civil war erupts to overthrow Macbeth, resulting in more death.

The play written by William Shakespeare has been directed by Zahid Repon while the story reconstruction has been done by Juana Sobnom.

“We actually planned the play after a workshop we conducted recently on mime. After that, we thought to produce the play. We selected this famous play written by William Shakespeare which we tried to present without using any dialogue so. I tried to show that a play can reach the audience without using any language. So that people who are not familiar with any specific language can also understand the play just by watching it. However, there will be the use of music to create the proper atmosphere,” said Zahid Repon.

“The story of the play is familiar to everyone. I choose this story as it is something that happened thousands of times in thousands of different places with thousands of people. For example, Nawab Sirajuddaula got betrayed by someone he trusted and who was very close to him,” said Repon.

“The same thing happened with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was also killed by those he once trusted. This is one message I want to give to this play. I also tried to blend some of our elements in this play to make it more relatable to the audience. I hope everyone will come to watch the new production. Hope they will like it,” he added.

A total of 14 members are working behind the production. The key role of Macbeth will be played by Tarek Aziz Nishok while Juana Sobnom will be seen playing the role of one of the three witches of Macbeth.

“My role starts as a protagonist and then I become the antagonist character. The whole story goes as the six enemies of human spirituality and these actually drive one towards the wrong path. I always wanted to give this famous dialogue of Macbeth which he gave after his wife’s death which goes as, “a tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” This is something I always wanted to do,” said Tarek Aziz Nishok.

Apart from them, the play will have, Fazle Rabee Sukarno, Shakhawat Shamol, Shishir Shikder and others in various roles.
