Cultural affairs ministry emphasises transgender participation

State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid has said the cultural affairs ministry will try to ensure the participation of the transgender community in any programme organised by the ministry.

“Now is the time to ensure the rights of the transgender community to everything. We will try to accommodate them in various discussion programmes arranged by the ministry so that they can take part in discussions. Besides, we will try to allocate them five to 10 minutes to perform in our programmes,” said the minister while inaugurating a regional art and film festival titled ‘Reincarnate 3’ at Mahila Samity auditorium in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Tourist police chief Additional IGP Habibur Rahman, Deputy Chief of Mission at US Embassy in Dhaka Helen LaFave, and Country Director of UNAIDS Dr Saima Khan were present at the event as special guests.

“The life of the transgender community in the midst of society is painful. They are still far behind in the patriarchal social system. As profession, they are living life on the streets by collecting tolls from markets, buses, streets. Everywhere, they remain neglected,” said the minister, adding, “They deserve a place in the society. When the family dismisses them with disdain, we must stand by them.”

‘Reincarnate 3’ features the screening of 25 films and documentaries made on transgender communities from 6 countries in the South Asian region. There is also an exhibition of 25 artworks at the gallery of the auditorium. The event, organised by the Bandhu Social Welfare Society, ends today.
