I’ll stop working when I’d feel my works losing quality: Mishu

Morshed Mishu, a well-known cartoonist debuted in acting last year with Nuhash Humayun’s Pett Kata Shaw. He was highly praised for his performance in the episode ‘Loke Bole’. His next project ‘Internship’ is releasing soon on Chorki. In a conversation with The Business Post’s Purba Zannat, Mishu talked about his works, acting experience and a lot more

People know you as a cartoonist but what made you start acting?

It’s not like I’ve left my career as a cartoonist and started a career in acting. I’m still a cartoonist and I’ll do that as long as I can. I won’t be quitting this. The whole acting thing started as a part of the hobby and somehow I’m enjoying it. Till now, I feel that people are appreciating my acting. When I will feel that the quality of my works is decreasing I will stop. I don’t want to disappoint the audience. So that’s it.

What was the story behind the beginning of your acting?

To be honest, the story behind my starting the journey in mainstream acting is quite weird. It all started from a Facebook comment. Basically, when the pre-production of ‘Pett kata Shaw’ began, the co-producer of the series Masudul Amin Rintu posted a status on Facebook looking for a tall guy with long hair. So I just randomly commented that I’ve long hair and think I’ve got a good look too and moreover I’m tall as well. So after that, I put the phone on silent mode and just went to attend a meeting. When I finished the meeting and checked the phone I was kind of shocked to see so many missed calls from so many people from that team. Then I just realised something just happened. Later, I called them back and they said Nuhash is making a series on folk tales of our country and the team wants me to work on that project. I always admired the work of Nuhash. I found the script very interesting and as the shoot was outside of Dhaka I thought why not to give it a try?

How was the shooting experience?

The fact is I didn’t feel any hardship as I knew the whole team. Most of them were my juniors and seniors from my university and workplace. Apart from that, the co-artistes were very welcoming. The co-artistes of mine had theatre backgrounds. I’ve learned a lot from them. I felt good when most of my shots were coming out according to what the director was asking for. That actually boosted my confidence.

How did you feel after your first work became a much-talked-about one?

The horror genre is a hard one to work with and this film became a milestone for the Bangladeshi horror genre. I definitely feel good to be a part of this project. People actually know me as a cartoonist and they didn’t think I can perform that well before the camera. So, after they saw me on screen, most of them praised me a lot. I actually enjoyed it. Later on, I thought to stop acting as I thought this one turned out good and I was eager to ruin this good image. Things didn’t turn out as I planned, though.

How did you feel to work with Misha and Dipjal in ‘Kabadi’?

After ‘Pett Kata Shaw’, I’ve not received any offer for the next six months at least. It was very weird for me as people kept asking me about my next work and I had no offers. Then I got the offer of ‘Ogochora’, ‘Kabadi’ and ‘Internship’. Rubayet Mahmood, the director of ‘Kabadi’ is a close senior of mine. However, I’ve not shared the screen with Dipjol sir and Misha Sawdagor sir. I met Misha sir once on set but didn’t have the courage to talk. Yet being a part of this project is something I cherish.

What’s your next plan?

The ‘Internship’ will be released soon on Chorki. I’ll be seen there in the role of Rafid who is an editor. ‘Ogochora’ will be released on Binge. I’ll be doing another project with Nuhash which is expected to be released on Valentine’s Day, This is it for now.

Apart from that, I have plans as an artist. I won’t be disclosing much but all I can say is that I have plans to work based on Liberation War, the Walls of Dhaka City and Markets of Dhaka.
