Popular actress Farhana Mili will appear on the stage with the play ‘Toposhi O Torongini’. The play will be staged as a part of the ‘Puber Nobonatya’ theatre festival, which will take place in Kolkata. The festival will start on January 23 and continue till January 31.
Theatre troupe Loko Natyadal will stage the play on the opening day of the festival at Tapas Sen Kumar Natya Bhawan.
“To be honest, it was Liaquat Ali, who motivated me to be back on stage again. I’m trying to be regular again. The play ‘Toposhi O Torongini’ made me fall in love with theatre once again. It also helped me find myself again in a new way,” said Mili.
“I now feel that I do have a different kind of feeling for theatre. I’m thankful to Liaquat sir. He is a very busy person, yet he’s so dedicated to his theatre troupe. He always manages to find time for the team. This Kolkata trip is also happening because of Liaquat sir. I hope the trip will be successful,” she added.
‘Puber Nobonatya’ is a festival that has been organised with various theater plays in Bangladesh. The festival has been organised by ‘Kalyani Natya Charcha Kendra’.
The play ‘Toposhi O Torongini’ has been directed by Liaquat Ali Lucky it was originally written by Buddhadeb Basu in 1966. The play is a modern-minded creation that breaks all the old-fashioned thoughts in mythological characters described in Ramayana-Mahabharata.
The play starts with, a young sage named Rishyashringa engrossed in meditation in a dense forest on the banks of the Ganges. However, the king of the region to which the forest belonged, became inert due to the curse of Indra. Thus, there was no rainfall in that region, so the crop fields are burning. The epidemic situation is raging in the kingdom, and women are also becoming barren. According to the astronomic calculations of priests in that region, the rain will only occur if anyone can break the meditation and the virginity of the sage. Only then will the kingdom become fertile again and be freed from the curse. That is why Torongini, the most beautiful woman in the state, is sent to the forest to break the meditation of Rishyashringa. Meanwhile, Rishyashringa is engrossed in attaining salvation. He does not know any social issues in the world. He does not even know the difference between men and women. He is adamant about celibacy. Even his father stays alert always so that his son’s meditation does not break.
The play goes on about how Torongini breaks the meditation of sage Rishyasringa and brings him to the kingdom through her devotion, love, dress-ups, and tricks.
Swadesh Ranjan Dasgupta, Rubel Shankar, Abu Bakar Bakshi, Masood Suman, Tushti, and others will be seen playing various characters in the play.
