Tareque returns with solo show at Galleri Kaya

Printmaker Najib Tareque is returning to gallery with his latest solo exhibition titled “8th Solo Exhibition” on February 3 at Galleri Kaya in the capital.

The exhibition will showcase a selection of 67 prints done in the relief process on paper.

The British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Robert Chatterton Dickson, will inaugurate the exhibition at 5:00pm on Friday. Artist Kazi Rakib, will also be present at the opening event.

The show will remain open every day from 11:30am to 7:30pm until February 14.

Najib had his last solo exhibition titled “Anybody Can Do It, Please Do It” in 2019.

The artist is best known for new media artworks and is one of the pioneers of online art galleries in Bangladesh. Tareque was the founding member of Jolrong, one of the first online art galleries in South Asia.

Tareque was a student at the Institute of Fine Art at Dhaka University. Academically trained in printmaking, the artist didn’t limit himself to one medium. He effortlessly jumped from pen to pencil to watercolour, oil, lithography, woodcut, acrylic, and even digital. He is known to have a special talent for finding his materials in the most unlikely places. Sometimes his works even contain industrial and household scrap.

Tareque credits a lot of his work to his curious mind, his early exposure to political thinking and the magic of world art, and his lack of ambition. He loves to spend lazy, solitary time in his residence or studio, sometimes in deep thought, other times just enjoying a Tamil movie.

He is a prolific creator but a highly reserved exhibitor. Printmaking remains one of his favourite pastimes, and perhaps his original passion.
