Today marks the 73rd birthday of MA Alamgir, the celebrated actor, producer, and director of Bangladeshi cinema.
Known as one of the evergreen heroes of the film industry, Alamgir is a multi-time National Film Award winner who received the ‘Lifetime Honour’ at the National Film Awards on December 8, 2019.
Born on April 3, 1950, Alamgir spent his childhood and youth in the Tejgaon area in the capital. He started his acting career by performing in theatre plays during his student life. He made his on-screen debut through the movie ‘Amar Janmabhoomi’ on June 24, 1972, directed by the late veteran director Alamgir Kumkum.
Since then, Alamgir has acted in over 225 movies, and his contributions to the Bangladeshi film industry have earned him the title of a true superhero in movies and also in reality. He has also produced and directed several films, including ‘Ekti Cinemar Golpo’, which holds special significance in his life.
‘Ekti Cinemar Golpo’ was the last work of Alamgir as a director and the film bagged National Film Award for both Runa Laila and Ankhi Alamgir.
Congratulating Alamgir on his birthday, his wife, internationally renowned musician and composer Runa Laila, said, “Many wishes and love for him on his birthday. I pray to the Almighty to keep him healthy and well. May this great-hearted man who is dedicated to the welfare of the people, be allowed to do more work for the welfare of the people in the future. If he is healthy and good, we all can live happily.”
Alamgir’s commitment to the film industry and his support for ordinary people have earned him various epithets. Still, he remains humble and focused on his work.
