‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ from Universal and Illumination has surpassed all previous 2023 releases at the box office in less than a week with $508.7 million in worldwide ticket sales as of Thursday, reports the Hollywood reporters.
Super Mario quickly overtook Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ as the year’s highest-grossing film, earning $474.4 million worldwide, including $212.2 million in the United States.
The film has broken a growing number of records since its long Easter weekend release, including being the most successful video game adaptation of all time after surpassing War craft ($439.4 million) and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu ($449.8 million).
It is also the second-biggest animated movie after another Illumination picture, Minions: The Rise of Gru, which brought in $942.5 million.
Super Mario is already Universal’s tenth-biggest animated movie of all time at the global box office, and it is one of just 13 Hollywood productions that have surpassed $500 million globally since 2019. Out of the thirteen, five belong to Universal, more than any other studio (the other four being Jurassic World: Dominion, Rise of Gru, F9: The Fast Saga, and No Time to Die).
According to Hollywood Reporter, The spooky thriller ‘The Pope’s Exorcist’ from Screen Gem and Universal’s modern-day Dracula vampire comedy ‘Renfield’ are already in a tight fight. Thursday previews for Renfield, starring Nicholas Hoult and Nicolas Cage, began with $900,000. Pope’s Exorcist, featuring Russell Crowe, came next with $850,000. The two movies are expected to debut in the $8 million to $10 million area.
