Loko Natyadal brings ‘Toposhi O Torongini’ on BSA stage today

Theatre troupe Loko Natyadal is going to stage its 19th production titled ‘Toposhi O Torongini’ today at 7:00pm at National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital.

Liaquat Ali Lucky directed the play, which was originally written by Buddhadeb Basu in 1966. The play is a modern-minded creation that breaks all the old-fashioned thoughts in mythological characters described in Ramayana-Mahabharata.

The play starts with, a young sage named Rishyashringa being engrossed in meditation in a dense forest on the banks of the Ganges. However, the king of the region to which the forest belonged, became inert due to the curse of Indra. Thus, there was no rainfall in that region so the crop fields are burning. The epidemic situation is raging in the kingdom and women are also become barren. According to the astronomic calculation of priests in that region, the rain will occur only if anyone can break the meditation and the virginity of the sage. Only then the kingdom will become fertile again and will be freed from the curse. That is why Torongini, the most beautiful woman in the state, is sent to the forest to break the meditation of Rishyashringa. Meanwhile Rishyashringa is engrossed in attaining salvation. He has no knowledge of any social issues in the world. He does not even know the difference between men and women. He is adamant about celibacy. Even his father stays alert always so that his son’s meditation does not break.

The play goes on how Torongini breaks the meditation of sage Rishyasringa and brings him to the kingdom through her devotion, love, dress-ups and tricks. Swadesh Ranjan Dasgupta, Rubel Shankar, Abu Bakar Bakshi, Masood Suman, Farhana Milli, Shamima Tushti, Mumu Masood and others will be seen playing various characters in the play.
