An exhibition of acclaimed painter Aminul Islam’s artworks titled ‘Organicity’ is currently underway at the Quamrul Hassan Exhibition Hall of Bengal Shilpalay.
The exhibition showcases 97 artworks by the artist, curated by Wakilur Rahman.
Writer Hasnat Abdul Hye inaugurated the exhibition on Tuesday evening.
“Aminul Islam is, a pioneer of modern painting practice, and he himself has also done contemporary works. He worked with many media, and kept drawing regularly throughout his life. In his early life, his work was figurative but it went between figurative and abstract in his mid-life. Now, he works entirely with the abstract genre. With this exhibition, the new generation can see the line drawings of the artist,” said Hasnat Abdul Hye while launching the exhibition.
The works of Aminul featured in this exhibition are painted between the 1970s and 2000s and they are from the Abul Khair Collection.
The Bengal Foundation has organised this exhibition to highlight the pioneer artist to the new generation.
Aminul Islam is one of the first generation of artist and pioneer of the modern art movement, emerged as a prominent figure in the art scene of his country.
Being one of the few artists admitted to the Government Art College in Dhaka on the first batch in 1948, he laid the foundation for modern art in his nation. After completing his higher education in Florence, where he absorbed various Western artistic influences, Aminul effortlessly mastered the world of abstract art.
Driven by a strong sense of social responsibility derived from his leftist political ideology, his artwork in the 1950s and 1960s depicted the sufferings, sorrows, and crises experienced by the people of his country.
Proficient in various mediums such as oil, watercolour, mosaics, murals, and collages, Aminul particularly excelled in sketching, employing tools like pen, ink, and pencil on paper.
His art became an expression of modernism in Bangladesh, characterised by the unique qualities and creative expression he infused into his work.
Additionally, Aminul dedicated three decades to teaching at the Fine Arts Institute, further nurturing the growth of artistic talent. Throughout his lifetime, he held nine solo exhibitions and participated in 43 group exhibitions, both at home and abroad.
Recognised for his outstanding contributions, Aminul received numerous prestigious awards, including the Grand Imperial Prize in 1966, the Ekushey Padak in 1981, and the Independence Medal at the Fifth Tehran Biennale in 1988.
Born on November 7, 1931, he left a lasting legacy in the art world before his passing on July 8, 2011.
The exhibition is open to all every day from 4:00pm to 8:00pm till July 8.
