June 11 is the 13th death anniversary of noted freedom fighter, filmmaker, and film activist Badal Rahman. Like every year, Moviyana Film Society has organised a commemorative programme to observe the day, which will be held today at 6 pm at Pathak Samabesh Kendra in the capital’s Katabon area.
This year, reviews of the book ‘Mukhomukhi Badal Rahman’ by Belayat Hossain Mamun will be held in memory of Badal Rahman.
The book titled ‘Mukhomukhi Badal Rahman’, authored by Belayet Hossain Mamun contains interviews of Badal Rahman. Published by Kathaprakash, the book captures Badal Rahman’s illustrious career as a filmmaker and organiser and the socio-political conditions of pre- and post-independence Bangladesh.
Film researcher and writer Anupam Hayat, eminent film researcher Junaid Halim, Dhaka DocLab’s director Tareq Ahmed and organiser Biplab Mostafiz will read and discuss the book ‘Mukhomukhi Badal Rahman’ at the event. President of Moviyana Film Society Belayet Hossain Mamun will preside over the event.
Born on June 4 in 1949, veteran filmmaker and film society activist Badal Rahman passed away on June 11 in 2010. In his lifetime, he was enthusiastically involved with the film society movement in Bangladesh from the beginning. He was the director of the first full-length feature film for children in Bangladesh, ‘Emiler Goyenda Bahini’, which earned huge popularity among viewers and critics even outside Bangladesh.
A couple of notable films made by the late Rahman, those themed on children, including ‘Chhana O Muktijuddha’ and ‘Kathal Burir Bagan’ earned noteworthy credit from all concerns. He was a pioneer in conducting the first film appreciation course in the country. To note, Badal Rahman was also the president of the Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh till his demise.
