Animator makes history as first American to direct an episode of One Piece

In a groundbreaking move, Toei Animation has chosen American animator Henry Thurlow to direct an upcoming episode of the beloved anime series One Piece. This historic decision marks the first time that a non-Japanese animator has been entrusted with directing an episode of a Toei Animation television series, according to CBR.

Thurlow, who currently resides in Japan, has an impressive portfolio, having worked as a Key Animator on renowned series such as Attack on Titan, Pokémon, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Tokyo Ghoul. He joined Toei’s animation team in 2021 and made his first contribution to the One Piece anime in Episode 903, where he skillfully animated the intense battle between Luffy and Urashima, a major antagonist in the Wano Country Arc. Thurlow continued to lend his talents as a Key Animator for subsequent episodes and even worked on the latest One Piece film, One Piece Film: Red.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece manga debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1997, captivating readers with its adventurous tale. The anime adaptation by Toei Animation premiered in 1999 and is currently in its 20th season, which is centered around the highly anticipated Wano Country arc. Episode 1066, helmed by Thurlow, is set to air on June 25 and is expected to cover the thrilling climax of Trafalgar Law and Eustass Kid’s battle against Big Mom, while Luffy’s epic showdown with Kaido also reaches its climax.
