Bangladesh’s music industry has lost one of its legendary singers as Sharifa Rani, a well-known Bhawaiya singer, passed away at the age of 73 on Thursday.
She breathed last in a private hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka. Her death was confirmed to the media by her relatives.
Sharifa Rani was born on June 9, 1950, in Rangpur. She earned her undergraduate degree from Rajshahi University and her masters from Dhaka University. In her early career, she was a radio and TV singer but left the profession in the late 1970s after settling down in Dhaka with her engineer husband.
Her songs, with their roots in folk music, became immensely popular even before the Liberation War. ‘Kanichato Garinu Akashi Akali’, one of her iconic songs, was widely beloved when it was released in Rangpur Betar. Some of her other nota-ble songs include ‘Baokata Batash Jeno Ghuriya Ghuriya More’, ‘Bandhu Kajal Bhomra Re’, and ‘O Ki Gariyal Bhai’. Her songs made her a legend in the Bhawaiya community.
Sharifa Rani’s passing is a significant loss for the music industry and her fans. Her unique voice and contribution to the Bhawaiya genre will be remembered for generations to come.
