‘Hawa’ goes international with 100 theatres across US

After the historical opening success of acclaimed and popular Bangladeshi director and musician Mejbaur Rahman Sumon’s debut feature film, ‘Hawa,’ is now set for overseas theatrical release across four countries.

Shimul Chandra Biswas, the film’s executive producer, told The Business Post, “‘Hawa’ is scheduled for release in Australia from August 13 and the New Zealand release date will be confirmed within this week. The film’s North American run will start on September 2 with 100 confirmed theatres across the US and numerous theatres in Canada. But our North American distributors are working to bump up the US theatre numbers to more than 120. That too will be announced by the end of this week.”

The film’s production company Sun Music and Motion Pictures Ltd have told several media outlets that many other countries have also shown interest to screen the film in their local theatres.

Moreover, deshievents.com.au, the Australian distributor of the film have already announced on their site that most of the tickets for the first week have already been sold out.

‘Hawa’ was released on July 29 with 23 theatres and 66 housefull shows across the country.

It broke all box office records in the recent past with almost a week-worth of tickets booked and sold out online three days before the film’s release. Bangladesh’s biggest multiplex chain Star Cineplex’s website crashed when they began pre-sales on July 26.

The film also broke the record of being the first Bangladeshi film which took over slots for the recently released Marvel Studios’ film ‘Thor: Love and Thunder.’

Bangladeshi multiplexes had to cut down their screenings of the Hollywood blockbuster to accommodate ‘Hawa.’

The star-studded film was shot by “Monpura” famed cinematographer Kamrul Hasan Khasru and stars Chanchal Chowdhury, Nazifa Tushi, Sariful Islam Razz, Sumon Anowar, Shohel Mondol, Nasir Uddin Khan, Abdul Jabbar Chowdhury, Mahmud Hasan and Bablu Bose, among others.

Jaaz Multimedia is the local distributor of the film.
