As the sweltering summer heat intensifies, reliance on air conditioners (ACs) becomes inevitable for many households and offices in Bangladesh.

However, improper usage of ACs can lead to soaring electricity bills and significant damage to the unit, sometimes even causing it to burst into flames, resulting in immense casualties.

Here are some expert tips to optimise AC performance, reduce energy consumption, and ensure longevity and safety, saving both money and potential hazards in the long run.

Before purchasing an AC, it is crucial to evaluate the latest technologies offered by each brand to make a well-informed choice.

Investing in an inverter AC can significantly reduce electricity bills, as the compressor motor adjusts its running speed according to the room temperature, thereby reducing energy consumption and being environmentally friendly.

Utilising electrical equipment during off-peak hours, rather than peak hours (5pm to 11pm), is an effective strategy to reduce bills.

Ensure that your air conditioner is appropriately sized for the space it needs to cool. An oversized unit will cycle on and off more frequently, leading to higher energy consumption and increased wear and tear on the components, which can ultimately shorten the lifespan of the unit.

Set your AC to an energy-efficient temperature, ideally around 25 degrees Celsius (78 degrees Fahrenheit), when you are at home. Raising the temperature by just a few degrees can significantly reduce energy usage.

In Bangladesh, winter spans from October to January, during which the AC remains unused, often leading to various problems once the heat returns and people begin using their ACs again.

To mitigate this, regular maintenance and servicing are essential. Schedule annual maintenance checks for your air conditioner to ensure it operates at peak efficiency.

This includes cleaning or replacing air filters, checking refrigerant levels, and inspecting the unit for any leaks or damage.

When too much dirt accumulates in the AC filter, the filters become clogged and do not work properly, making it very difficult for the machine to cool the room and resulting in higher electricity consumption.

Therefore, AC filters should be cleaned every month to ensure proper functionality and lower electricity costs.

Many advanced ACs offer different efficiency modes, such as 80 per cent, 60 per cent, or 25 per cent efficiency, which consume less electricity. Utilising these modes can be a more efficient option for reducing electricity bills.

Certain AC units may overheat if operated continuously for extended periods, leading to excessive strain on electrical components.

Additionally, power surges or voltage fluctuations can trigger electrical issues, potentially causing the unit to fail.

To ensure longevity, optimal performance, and safety, service your AC at least twice a year. Several companies offer AC servicing, with prices starting at Tk 1,000, although costs may vary depending on the specific issues your AC faces. Many online shops now offer servicing packages, which can be very convenient.

By following these tips, you can master your AC, ensuring it runs efficiently and economically, extending its lifespan, and keeping your electricity bills in check while prioritising safety.
