Despite his international debut in 2017, all-rounder Ashton Turner has played only nine one-day internationals and 13 twenty20 internationals for Australia. Among those 22 matches, eight have been in India.
His debut came against Sri Lanka in Melbourne. But after a disappointing series, he had to wait two years for another opportunity. And that came in India in 2019.
After a disappointing twenty20 international series there,
Turner finally portrayed his ability in the fourth one-day international of their five-match series against India. Chasing 359, he struck an unbeaten 84 off just 43 deliveries to take Australia home.
From there on, Turner became a regular for the Aussies in white-ball cricket. And now, he is with the team in Bangladesh, waiting for the five-match T20I series to start from August 3.
The all-rounder is more known for his big-hitting ability than his off-spin and does not have a great record in Asia bar that knock of unbeaten 84, but still, he is excited to play on the turning tracks in Bangladesh.
“I am really excited, this is my first time in Bangladesh. I think I am learning from my job. We will probably get wickets that are not very similar to what we saw in the West Indies.
“Coming from Australia, we do not get to play on many wickets
to spin like this. So as a spinner, I am really excited to have wickets
that offer something because that is not really the case in Australia,” the 28-year-old all-rounder said in a virtual press conference Sunday.
Turner also has to bat against spin that is one of his key roles as batting at number five or six, and Turner is really up for facing some crafty spin from the opponent.
“As a batter, we know that we have to come up against some crafty spin bowlers, a lot of overs will be bowled by the spinners. No doubt,” said Turner, who broke into the Australian side in their series against West Indies nearly after two years.
He is also aiming at claiming a spot in the Australian squad for the World T20 coming up later this year and will try to capitalise on the coming days to ensure that.
“Every time I am around the Australian squad, the hunger to stay within the squad is immense because it is an amazing place to be. I will try to grab every opportunity with both hands. With the World Cup being the showcase event, there will be many quality players vying for the rigid number of spots. Now it is up to me, how I do in the next couple of months and put my name in front of the selectors,” Turner said.
