Broadcast blackout bothers Aussies

The broadcast blackout of the Bangladesh-Australia Twenty20 series in Australia is bothering the touring cricketers and their family members who cannot watch them play.

Aussie left-arm spinner Ashton Agar said in a virtual press conference on Thursday morning that his wife is unhappy because she has not been able to watch the matches in Australia as no TV channel is broadcasting the series.

“Well my wife is not happy about it because she doesn’t get to watch me play very much at the moment,” Agar said.

Not just Agar’s wife, some of his teammates who have not joined

him in the Bangladesh tour are also not happy about being unable to watch the matches.

Aaron Finch, who was supposed to lead the team in this tour but had to return home due to a knee injury sustained during the West Indies tour, wrote in his Twitter account, “Can’t find it anywhere…I thought it was meant to be via YouTube in Australia.”

It is the first time since Australia’s tour of Pakistan in 1994 that the Aussies are unable to watch their team from home on the television.

A high official of a broadcasting channel told The Business Post that Australian channels asked for free feed that the local rights holders did not agree to.

“They contacted through BCB and also via other channels. But so far, Australian channels like Fox, Viacom, Nine have asked for a free feed. They did not agree to pay any money. They will only broadcast the matches if the free feed is provided that the rights holder did not agree’, he told seeking anonymity.
