Jamaica regains 4x100 meter relay crown

Elaine Thompson-Herah won her third Olympic gold of the Tokyo Games as Jamaica romped home in the women’s 4x100 metres relay on Friday, timing a national record of 41.02sec.

Thompson-Herah -- who achieved the sprint ‘double double’ -- ran the second leg, opening up a sizeable gap on their opponents.

The United States took silver (41.45sec) and Britain the bronze (41.88sec).

Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas successfully defended her Olympic 400m crown on Friday, completing a double for the Caribbean nation following compatriot Steven Gardiner’s victory in the men’s race.

The 27-year-old from Nassau surged to the line in 48.36sec, with Maileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic taking silver and Allyson Felix of the United States claiming bronze.

Sebastian Cordova scored a penalty and created two goals as Mexico defeated hosts Japan 3-1 in Saitama on Friday to earn bronze in the men’s Olympic football tournament.

Brittney Griner scored a game-high 15 points as a dominant United States moved a step closer to a seventh consecutive Olympic women’s basketball title Friday, sweeping past Serbia and into a final against Japan.

The Americans were 41-23 ahead at half-way and kept firm control to win 79-59 and set up a gold medal clash against the host nation, who reached their first-ever final with an impressive 87-71 rout of 2012 silver medallists France.
