Domingo likely to get contract extension

Bangladesh national team head coach Russel Domingo is likely to get a contract extension with the Bangladesh Cricket Board as the current one is coming to an end this month, said a BCB official.

The South Africa-born Domingo is a former assistant to Gary Kirsten, who was then the head coach of the Proteas. Later, Domingo replaced him as the head coach. Domingo came to Bangladesh on August 21, 2019, initially with a two-year contract. Now, his tenure is likely to get extended despite some shortcomings as the BCB can not afford a new coach just before the New Zealand series or T20 world cup.

“His contract is getting extended. At present we are thinking positively about him and initially his contract will be extended up to the T20 World Cup. After that we will think again”, a BCB official told The Business Post.

BCB appointed another South African, Ashwell Prince as the batting consultant for the Tigers on Thursday. His contract tenure runs till the T20 World Cup of 2022. Under the guidance of Domingo, Tigers achieved success in limited overs cricket but faltered in Test matches.

Bangladesh lost to a second-string West Indies team at home in a two-match Test series which brought him under criticism.

But the Tigers’ successful Zimbabwe tour and the crushing of Australia in the Twenty20 in recent times and also the first ever T20 win against India in 2019 and the first-ever One-Day International series win against Sri Lanka could be credited as his success as the head coach.
