Mohammedan Sporting Club is trying to regain their old glory as they formed a strong team for the upcoming edition of Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League by recruiting a bunch of national stars.
T20I captain Mahmudullah, wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim and Soumya Sarkar joined Mohammedan for the upcoming season of DPL that is scheduled to take place in March next year. Taskin Ahmed, who played for Mohammedan last season, will also be staying.
The cricketers signed the contracts on Sunday evening at the residence of Inspector General of police Benazir Ahmed, the chairman of the club’s development committee and a permanent member.
Mahmudullah played for Gazi Group Cricketers in the previous season where Soumya also played. Mushfiq played for Dhaka Abahani Limited, where he was the skipper before missing out last few matches for a finger injury.
Mahmudullah said that in the upcoming season, he will try to end the trophy drought since the 2009-10 season.
“It will be my second year at Mohammedan, and hopefully, we will be able to give the supporters the gift of the championship,” he said.
Mahmudullah led Gazi in the last season, and his former team came fourth. This time around, he wants the title.
“The mission is to play for the championship. As you can see, me, Mushfiqur, Soumya and Taskin are here and hopefully, Shakib will join. Mohammedan have formed a strong team with good players, and if we can perform, hopefully, can become champions,” said the national captain.
His brother-in-law and long-time team-mate, Mushfiqur Rahim, who had a successful stint with arch-rivals Abahani last season, also changed camps.
“Dhaka Premier League is certainly the number one league, and everyone knows the reputation of the tournament and how competitive it is. Mohammedan is certainly on the top clubs, and although they haven’t found success in the last few years and this year, they have tried to get a few good players,” said Mushfiq.
“I feel lucky and honoured that they have signed me, and we hope to win the championship. While winning is also a matter of luck, I feel that we have the players needed to fight for the championship,” he added.
Mohammedan official AGM Sabbir told The Business Post that they are trying to rope in Shakib Al for the next season too, “Shakib played for us in the last season, we have also talked with him, hopefully, he will also play for Mohammedan in the next season.”
