After Bangladesh’s defeat to Sri Lanka in their opening game of the Super 12 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup, former Tigers’ skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza lashed out at the coaching staff of the team saying that the team management looked like a ‘rehab centre for South African coaches’.
Mashrafe, in his personal Facebook account, said that the management was full of South African coaches unable to find a job.
“If you look at the team management, it looks like a rehab centre where all the South African coaches who can’t find a job are working at our rehab centre. Firing them is even bigger trouble because then they will take all the money for the full tenure of contract and leave. So, the thing is that they will stay as long as they want and will do whatever they want,” Mashrafe wrote in his Facebook post.
Mashrafe also questioned Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo saying asking that why does the coach step up for his compatriot coaching staff but not the players.
“Head coach has brought staff from his country one by one. Now those who are temporary, he will also remove them and design the team management as he likes. Okay, I will accept that but why does Russell step up for the management but not for the team? Why do Tamim (Iqbal), Mushfiq (ur Rahim), (Mahmudullah) Riyad don’t stay well? Isn’t that his job to fix this?” the former skipper asked.
Bangladesh fast bowling coach Ottis Gibson was questioned regarding Mashrafe’s comments during his press conference ahead of the Tigers’ match against England, and the Caribbean coach ducked the question.
“I have no thoughts whatsoever (about Mashrafe’s comments). That doesn’t interest or concern me what anybody outside of our circle is saying. We know what we do here as a coaching group, so whatever anybody outside the group is saying doesn’t really matter,” Ottis said.
Liton Das dropped Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa in Bangladesh’s match against Sri Lanka, and they took the Lankans to a five-wicket victory.
Mashrafe also questioned the fielding coach Ryan Cook asking if he was enquired about the dropped chances.
“I will not give any excuse for Liton’s dropped chances, neither will Liton. Dropped catches are a part of the game. But is the fielding coach asked about these misses? Is this the first time that we have dropped catches? Almost everybody of the coaching staff lost their job after the 2019 World Cup. Only the current fielding coach survived. So, did we become the best fielding side?” Mashrafe asked.
Bangladesh will take on England in their second game of the Super 12 stage on Wednesday.
