Bangladesh’s final game of the World Cup against Australia was one that saw a flurry of records, but none of them was welcome for the Tigers.
The Tigers were bowled out for 73, their second-lowest total in Twenty20 internationals after their total of 70 against New Zealand in their last match of the 2016 T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh became only the third team to get bowled out below 100 in consecutive T20 World Cup matches, with the other two sides being Kenya and Afghanistan. Bangladesh are now the only full member of ICC to achieve this unique feat as Afghanistan achieved it in 2014, before receiving Test status.
Bangladesh were bowled out before reaching three figures for the fourth time this year- 76 vs New Zealand in April, 76 against New Zealand in September, 84 against South Africa on Tuesday and 73 against Australia on Thursday. No other full member has been bowled out below 100 more than twice in a year.
Australia chased down Bangladesh’s total within 82 deliveries in hand, the quickest the Tigers have seen their total chased down in T20Is. The previous record belonged to New Zealand, who had chased down 79 against Bangladesh in 2010 with 70 balls remaining.
Besides their disappointing batting and toothless bowling, Bangladesh were horrible in the field throughout the tournament. They dropped yet another sitter against Australia, taking their tally for dropped catches to 10. After Soumya Sarkar dropped Aaron Finch off Taskin Ahmed’s bowling, the bowler could not control himself as he dished out his frustration towards Soumya.
Soumya made a record himself, becoming the only Bangladesh batsman to have 10 ducks to his name in T20Is. He reached this milestone with his duck against South Africa and now ranks second for most ducks in the format.
Bangladesh captain Mahmudullah Riyad called their World Cup campaign disappointing. But to speak the truth, disastrous would have been an apt remark to explain their performances.
