Bangladesh claimed their first-ever medal in the Asian Archery Championships on Wednesday as they won bronze medals in both men’s and women’s recurve team events.

The Bangladesh women’s team, consisting of Diya Siddique, Beauty Ray, and Nasrin Akter, beat the Vietnamese team of Nguyet Do Thi Anh, Thi Ngoc Ha, and Nhi Nguyen Thi Thanh, by 5-3 set points to clinch the bronze medal.

After the win, archer Diya told the media that they were very happy to win the first-ever medal for Bangladesh in the Asian Archery Championships.

“The three of us were confident ahead of the match. We are very happy to win the first-ever bronze medal in an event like Asian Archery Championships. We reached the final and we three together won the bronze medal,” Diya said after the match.

In the men’s recurve event, the Bangladesh team of Mohammad Hakim Ahmed Rubel, Ram Krishna Saha, and Ruman Shana beat the Kazakhstan team of Ilfat Abdullin, Sanzhar Mussayev, and Dauletkeld Zhangbyrbay by 6-2 set points to seal the bronze medal.

After the win, Bangladeshi archer Ruman credited their coach Martin Frederick and said it was a big achievement for the country’s sports.

“We have become more and more confident since Frederick’s arrival. We played in a lot of tournaments. I said earlier that we had a big chance of winning a medal this time around. We have managed to fulfil that dream and achieve our goal. We have won the first medal in this event which is a big achievement for our sports arena,” Ruman said.

Bangladesh also have a shot at winning their first-ever gold medal in the Asian Archery Championships as Diya and Rubel will compete in the finals of the mixed doubles compound event against South Korea.
