SAFF Under-19 Women’s Championship 2021 will kick off today at the Bir Shrestha Shahid Sipahi Mohammad Mostofa Kamal Stadium in Kamalapur, Dhaka, with a match between Bangladesh and Nepal at 7 PM.

Bangladesh are the defending champions of this tournament. In 2018, Bangladesh faced Nepal in the final of the U-18 tournament in Bhutan, where they came out 1-0 victorious.

Before this edition, this tournament was for U-18 players. But due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is being held with U-19 players. Five teams are participating in this edition- Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka.

Ahead of the match, Bangladesh coach Golam Rabbani Choton and skipper Maria Manda took part in a press conference on Thursday.

Bangladesh have been touted to be the favourites, but Choton said that every team was targeting the trophy.

“Everyone has a chance to win the trophy. Our players are in good condition, and there is a good understanding between the experienced and young,” he said on Friday.

Bangladesh skipper Maria though is aiming at the trophy.

“We want to keep on the consistency we have displayed previously to become champions. We want the spectators to enjoy, and we want to become champions,” she said.
