Olympian Jahir jailed on rape charges, suspended

Bangladesh Athletics Federation has suspended sprinter Mohammad Jahir Rayhan from all athletic activities indefinitely after a Speedy Tribunal in Gazipur sent him to jail in a rape case.

The Federation suspended Jahir on Wednesday night citing moral turpitude and breach of discipline, according to a press release.

“Athlete Jahir Rayhan has been arrested by the police in a Women and Children Repression case. Since then, the player remained absent from the National Training Camp without taking any permission. He will not be able to participate in all sports activities--national and international levels--indefinitely,” reads the press release.

A female athlete filed a rape case rape with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Gazipur against Jahir in 2019.

In the case, the female athlete said she and Jahir had met during the 2017 training camp of the Bangladesh Athletics team, and on May 3, 2019, Jahir raped her on the false promise of marriage.

On Wednesday, Jahir, who participated in the Tokyo Olympics, appeared before the Tribunal in Gazipur to surrender. But, the tribunal refused his bail plea and sent him to jail.

There has been another rape allegation against Jahir where the plaintiff filed a complaint at Jahir’s workplace on September 2 saying that he raped her twice on the false promise of marriage.
