Bangladesh national hockey team put up a strong fight against South Korea in their second game of the Asian Champions Trophy but failed as they were defeated 3-2 at the Maulana Bhashani National Hockey Stadium in Dhaka on Friday.
After getting thrashed 9-0 by India, Bangladesh came back stronger against South Korea, who had drawn 2-2 against India in their opening game and are 20 steps ahead of Bangladesh in the rankings.
Arshad Hossain brought Bangladesh the lead in the eighth minute, when he scored a field goal, Bangladesh’s first in the tournament.
Khorshadur Rahman was shown the match’s first yellow card in the 11th minute before Prince Samundo had to leave the field after seeing a green card in the final minute of the first quarter.
And in that final minute, South Korea managed to draw level as Jang Jonghyun scored from a penalty stroke.
Bangladesh managed to hold on for the next two quarters as the score remained 1-1. But at the start of the fourth and final quarter, South Korea managed to take the lead when Ji Woo Cheon scored a field goal.
And in the 54th minute, Park Cheoleon scored South Korea’s third goal to seal the deal for them.
Bangladesh found some hope in the final minute when Md. Deen Emon scored a field goal to reduce the deficit to 3-2, but it was too little, too late as Bangladesh did not have the time to come back into the match.
Bangladesh will face Japan in their third game of the tournament today at the same venue.
