Bangladesh Cricket Board might reduce the number of teams from six to five for the upcoming Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League T20, scheduled to start from January 20, 2022.

The BCB president Nazmul Hasan told the reporters on Saturday that to accommodate the BPL in between the New Zealand series and the Afghanistan series, the length of BPL could be downsized.

“There are two issues regarding BPL. Firstly, the New Zealand series, which is the part of World Test Championship, and we can’t compare that with the BPL. Secondly, the Afghanistan series where the one-day internationals are part of the One Day Super League, both these two series are not more important than BPL, but as we have T20 World Cup in less than a year, BPL is also important,” he said.

“We might downsize the BPL. We could start the tournament without those who are now in New Zealand. They will join after returning from New Zealand and will get full payment. We could do that. For three venues, we have six travel dates. If we reduce one venue, we can save two days. If we drop the number of teams from six to five, we can chalk out four to five days,” Nazmul added.

“We can make the decisions after December 21. First, we have to see what happens with the national team in New Zealand. After that, we will see how we can run the BPL,” the BCB president told the reporters on Saturday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
