Bangladesh Football Federation appointed Spanish coach Javier Cabrera as the new head coach of the Bangladesh National Football Team on Saturday after a meeting of the National Teams Committee.
Cabrera has been appointed on an 11-month contract for the remainder of the year.
National Teams Committee chairman Kazi Nabil Ahmed said that Cabrera is likely to arrive in Bangladesh around January 15.
“Spaniard Javier Cabrera has been appointed as our new national team coach for 11 months, ending in December 2022. We are expecting him to be here by the 15th of this month,” Nabil said.
The Spaniard’s first assignment will be two friendly matches against Indonesia in Indonesia, scheduled to take place on January 24 and 27.
Cabrera will replace Jamie Day as the head coach of the national team, who was sacked before the SAFF Championship last year. Since then, Bashundhara Kings head coach Oscar Bruzon managed the team in the SAFF Championship, followed by Abahani Limited coach Mario Lemos coaching the side in a four-nation tournament in Sri Lanka later that year.
Cabrera worked as the head coach of FC Barcelona’s Youth Academy in North Virginia and Laliga side Deportivo Alaves’ elite youth academy. Besides, he also worked as the head coach and technical director of the Laliga Academy in India.
He also has experience in South Asia as he worked as the Technical Director and Coach of Sporting Goa from 2013 to 2015.
