Vicent Kipsang Rono from Kenya was the first runner among 580 participants to finish the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Dhaka Marathon 2022 which took place in the capital on Monday.

The running event was divided into two parts, a full marathon which is 42.15 kilometres, and a half-marathon which is 21.097 kilometres. A total of 580 runners participated in these events.

Among the elite runners, 10 men and four women took part in the full marathon, and in the half-marathon, four men and one woman participated from the elite runner category. Apart from the elite runners, participants from SAFF countries, and interested amateur runners took part in the event.

The race started early in the morning from the Army Stadium and the runners reached the finish line through Banani-Kemal Ataturk Avenue-Gulshan Circle 2-Circle 1-Police Plaza and finally circulated Hatirjheel. The race ended at the Hatirjheel Amphitheatre.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal inaugurated the race as the chief guest and State Minister for Youth and Sports, Zahid Ahsan Russel, was also present as a special guest.

Chief of Army Staff, General S M Shafiuddin Ahmed, distributed prizes among the winners in the closing ceremony.

Kipsang finished first among the elite runners in the male category, whereas in the female category, the winner was Ethiopia’s Muliye Dekebo. In the SAFF category, the male winner was India’s Bugatha Srinu, and the female winner was India’s Arati Patil.

Asif Bishwas from Bangladesh Navy finished first among male participants from Bangladesh, whereas Papya Khatun from Bangladesh Army finished first among local females.

The Army Chief stated that the event will take place each year on January 10 to mark the Homecoming Day of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
