Bangladesh under-19 cricket team will face India in the quarterfinal of the ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup as the junior Tigers defeated United Arab Emirates on Saturday.
In the third and final match of the group stage, Bangladesh U-19 won against by nine wickets, the match was decided by D/L method due to rain.
Bangladesh captain Rakibul Hasan won the toss at Basseterre and sent UAE to bat.
The UAE slipped to eight for two inside three overs as Ashiqur Zaman dismissed the two openers to earn himself figures of two for 14 from eight overs. Dhruv Parashar and captain Alishan Sharafu then combined to steady the ship for the UAE putting on 44 runs for the third wicket.
Punya Mehra then top-scored with 43 off 64 balls but could not find a partner to stay with him as the final seven wickets fell for 98 runs. Ripon Mondol returned Bangladesh’s best figures taking 3-31, with three other bowlers also coming away with dismissals.
Chasing 148, Bangladesh made a commanding start reaching 86 before losing their first wicket as Iftakher Hossain was caught by Soorya Sathish off the bowling of Jash Giyanani. Hossain had added 37 runs from 70 balls, with fellow opener Mahfijul Islam putting on 45 runs before the players were taken off the field due to rain in Basseterre.
Mahfijul was able to reach his half-century as the teams emerged with a new target of 107, the opener eventually reaching 64 not out from 6 balls, as Prantik Nawrose Nabil joined him in the middle as they sealed the victory and safe passage to the knockout stages.
Bangladesh will now face India, the group champions of group-B in the quarter final on January 29 at Coolidge Cricket Ground, Coolidge, Antigua.
Rakibul, after winning against UAE said, “This win means a lot to us; we lost our first game so we have to win back-to-back matches. We played well in both the matches, that’s very good for us”, he told the media.
Bangladesh were dominant in all three departments and Rakibul said this is how his team plays
“This is our brand of cricket; we start with pace bowling and the spinners follow; we are energetic on the ground. We try to do so every time, but sometimes things don’t go as planned. But we try to do this always”, he told ICC.
Rakibul is also confident about facing India in the quarterfinal.
The rivalry between India and Bangladesh reached to a new height when the Junior Tigers won against the boys in blue at Potchefstroom in the final of the 2020 edition of U-19 World Cup.
Bangladesh also lost to India in the semifinal of the ACC U-19 Asia Cup before coming to the Caribbeans to take part in the World Cup.
But the junior Tigers won a triangular series played against India U-19 A and India U-19 B at Kolkata.
Earlier, six members of the Indian U-19 cricket team were found covid-19 positive ahead of their match against Ireland.
They were; Sidharth Yadav, Manav Parakh, Vasu Vats, Yash Dhull, Aaradhya Yadav, SK Rasheed.
But despite missing some key players, India registered a massive win by 326 runs over Uganda in their last group stage match.
It was the second biggest win in youth ODI, the highest was by 430 runs when Australia U-19 defeated Kenya in the 2002 U-19 World Cup.
The line-up for the Super-League quarterfinals have been finalized as the group stage is over.
In the first QF, England will face South Africa at North Sound, in the second QF Sri Lanka will play against Afghanistan, in the third QF Pakistan will lock horns with Australia and on the last QF Bangladesh will face India.
