Salma, Murshida gain in T20I rankings

Despite Bangladesh women’s cricket team failing to reach the Commonwealth Games 2022, Bangladesh all-rounder Salma Khatun and batsman Murshida Khatun gained in the ICC T20I player rankings.

The International Cricket Council updated their rankings on Tuesday, after the ICC Commonwealth Games 2022 Qualifiers ended in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday. Bangladesh lost the last match of the tournament to Sri Lanka by 22 runs, leading to them missing out on the final spot in Birmingham.

But all-rounder Salma performed with the ball throughout the tournament and gained a step in the rankings to move up to seventh.

She picked five wickets in four matches, at an average of only nine, and an economy of just 3.21. She batted only in the match against Kenya, but with an unbeaten 33 runs, she managed to rescue the team and gain a win.

Bangladesh opener Murshida gained big in the batting rankings as she moved up 10 steps to 48th after her good showing in the Commonwealth Qualifiers. She scored 126 runs in four matches at an average of 42, including a fifty.

Bangladesh skipper Nigar Sultana Joty sits 29th in the batting rankings, the highest among Bangladesh players.

In bowling rankings, Salma is the highest-ranked Bangladesh player at 20th. She is followed by Nahida Akter at 28th, who was the highest wicket-taker in the Commonwealth Games Qualifiers. The spinner picked up 10 wickets in four matches at an incredible average of 8.10.

The other Bangladesh player in the top 20 of the ICC all-rounder rankings is Rumana Ahmed, who sits 18th.

But the biggest gainer from the Commonwealth Games Qualifiers was Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu. The Sri Lankan skipper was judged the player of the tournament and was also the player of the final match against Bangladesh.

She singlehandedly knocked Bangladesh out, scoring 48 with the bat and then picked up three wickets giving away only 17 runs. Athapaththu scored 221 runs in the whole tournament, at an outstanding average of 55.25 and a strike rate of 185.71.

She gained one step in the all-rounder rankings, but her big gain came in the batting rankings. She gained six steps in the batting rankings to jump up to eighth in the ICC batting rankings.
