First look at ADRS

After much controversy regarding umpiring decisions in the first Dhaka phase of the ongoing BPL, the Bangladesh Cricket Board added ADRS from the first match of the Chattogram phase.

Alternative Decision Review System or ADRS is a mean for teams to challenge the umpire’s decision. But unlike the conventional DRS system used in cricket nowadays, the third umpire will not have the help of either Hawk-eye or Snicko to make their decisions.

Rather, in cases of LBWs, the third umpire will only get to see where the ball pitched and would have to judge where the ball would end up, and make their decision. In case of appeals regarding catches, they will use slow-motion videos and audio from the stump mic synchronised.

The first look at ADRS was seen in the match between Khulna Tigers and Chattogram Challengers, where Khulna reviewed a decision for caught behind against Naeem Islam. The third umpire watched the slow-motion footage from different angles and made the judgement that the on-field umpire’s decision was correct. – TBP
