Joty to lead Bangladesh Women in their first WC

Nigar Sultana Joty will lead the Bangladesh Women’s national cricket team in their first appearance in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, scheduled to take place in New Zealand during March-April, said a media release from Bangladesh Cricket Board.

The BCB announced the squad for the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 on Friday, bringing back experienced all-rounder Jahanara Alam, who was excluded from the team for the Commonwealth Games qualifier.

The team started their preparation camp at the BCB National Cricket Academy on Saturday.

The expulsion of Jahanara raised controversies which brought forward some of her past activities but looks like the BCB has ignored her disciplinary record as she is one of the most experienced cricketers of the lot.

For the first time, Bangladesh Women’s team will take part in an ODI World Cup.

Skipper Nigar Sultana Joty is very excited to lead the first Bangladesh Women’s team to the World Cup.

“We are going to take part in the 50-overs World Cup for the first time. We are very excited, and each and every individual is looking forward to giving their best shots in the World Cup coming ahead. The team is balanced, we have experienced cricketers, and we have young and talented cricketers who are continuously doing well,” she said in a video message.

“ For the last one and half years, we have been playing together, we took part in several series. Therefore, the team combination and team spirit among ourselves are high. We solicit all your blessings so that we can do well in the World Cup,” she added.

Chief selector of the Women’s team, Manjurul Islam also told the media that the team is curated keeping everything in mind which includes experience, talent and performance at both home and abroad.

The women’s team will begin their World Cup endeavour at University Oval Dunedin against South Africa on March 5. In their next match, Joty’s team will take on hosts New Zealand at the same venue on March 7.

On March 14, Bangladesh will meet Pakistan at Seddon Park Hamilton, and then West Indies on March 18, and on March 22, Bangladesh will face India.

In their last group stage match, Bangladesh will play against England on March 27 but before that, Bangladesh will face Australia on March 25.
