BPL Football starts today

The new season of the Bangladesh Premier League football will kick off in two venues today, with two matches.

Defending Champions Bashundhara Kings will take on Swadhinata Krira Sangha at the Shahid Ahsan Ullah Master Stadium in Tongi, Gazipur, whereas Sheikh Jamal DC ltd will face Uttar Baridhara Club at the Flt Lt Matiur Rahman Stadium in Munshiganj.

On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Football Federation cancelled the Bashundhara Kings arena as a venue for the league after Bashundhara Kings, owner of the stadium, informed them that they will be using the stadium as their home ground.

BFF then refused, which led to the league being played on only two venues- the ones in Gazipur and Munshiganj.

After they decided to cancel Bashundhara Kings arena as a venue, BFF senior vice-president Salam Murshedi said, “The Bashundhara Sports Arena was complete, but we could not reach an agreement with Kings. So, we decided to start the league on time in two venues.”

Generally, the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka is used as the main venue of the league, but it is currently under reconstruction.

The Federation Cup was held at the Shaheed Sipahi Mostofa Kamal Stadium, from which three teams opted out with concern regarding the playing surface.

The league is set to end on March 19 or 20.
