Naveed to stay, Stonier departs after unsuccessful U-19 World Cup

Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team head coach Naveed Nawaz will be staying put in his role as he has one more year left in his existing contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board but fitness trainer Richard Stonier’s tenure with the Bangladesh Cricket Board is over with the World Cup, a BCB official said.

Cricketers returned from West Indies after an unsuccessful stint in the ICC Men’s U-19 World Cup 2022, where the junior Tigers finished eighth.

Bangladesh were the champions of the 2020 edition, and hopes were high this time, but the performances were not up to the mark as they managed to win only against Canada and UAE.

Chairman of the Game Development Committee at the BCB, Khaled Mahmud, is currently carrying out the role of head coach in the Bangladesh Premier League side Fortune Barishal but the manager of the department, AEM Kawsar, told The Business Post that the assessment and evolution meeting will take place right after the BPL.

The BCB official also said they have one more year left with Naveed Nawaz, who was the coach in 2020 as well.

Media reports in Sri Lanka claimed that Naveed has applied for the post of head coach of the Sri Lanka national team.

SLC appointed a six-member committee headed by Mahela Jayawardena to find their next head coach following the departure of Micky Arthur. The former batsman is in favour of Naveed, the reports suggested.

But Kawser told TBP they haven’t learned of any such things.

“We only know that we have one more year left in the contract with him. We are not aware of any such things,” he said on Wednesday,

Stonier showed some angry reactions on Instagram after the World Cup and said, ‘he is out’. Kawser said the contract with the fitness trainer was till the World Cup.

“Our contract with Richard was till the World Cup. So, if the board thinks in the future that his services are required, he might be contacted,” Kawser said.

Mehrab Hossain was the batting coach of the U-19 team, and Talha Jubair worked as the pace-bowling coach. Their roles will be assessed in the meeting, added Kawser.
