Ebadot, Joy get maiden ODI call-up

Ebadot Hossain and Mahmudul Hasan Joy got their maiden call for the Bangladesh one-day international team as chief selector Minhzaul Abedin announced the 15-member squad for the Afghanistan series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Bangladesh last played an ODI series in July 2020 against Zimbabwe, and the selectors have made seven changes from that team. The series is scheduled to start from February 23 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

Mohammad Naim, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Mosaddek Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Mohammad Mithun, Taijul Islam, and Mohammad Saifuddin lost their places in the ODI squad, whilst Ebadot and Joy earned their maiden call up in the national team.

Ebadot played an instrumental role in Bangladesh’s first-ever Test victory against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui, which made him one of the contenders for the ICC Player of The Month for January.

Joy Also played a crucial knock in that match and is doing well in the ongoing BPL.

“Ebadat is a Test bowler but he has been impressive with the white-ball recently. He has worked hard on his control, which is why we have considered him. Joy played a tremendous innings in the Test against New Zealand, so we are expecting something from him in the ODIs. We are confident that he can fit into the middle-order. He is dependable. He can play for a long time if he plays with confidence,” Minhajul told the media after the team announcement.

Nasum was part of the ODI squad during the New Zealand series in 2021 and has been a regular player for the Tigers in T20I format but is yet to make his debut in the 50-overs format.

Naim has been going through a lean patch, both at the international and domestic arena, which cost him his place.

“When a player isn’t in form for a considerable amount of time, it puts him into depression. I felt that we should give them some time to overcome this, and come back fresh. He remains in our sights. I am sure he will join the team shortly,” Minhajul said about Naim.
