Djokovic loses Medvedev face Nadal

Russian Daniil Medvedev,26, will move to the top of the world rankings on Monday after world number one,Novak Djokovic crashed out of the quarter-finals in the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Jiri Vesely of Czech Republic beat Djokovic by 6-4 7-6 (7-4).

Djokovic has spent a record 361 weeks at the top of the world rankings.

Medvedev will face off against Raphael Nadal in the semi-finals of the Mexican Open after both came out victorious in their quarter-final encounters.

Nadal advanced into the semis by beating Tommy Paul with a 6-0 7-6 (7-5) win while Medvedev won 6-2 6-3 against Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka.

Nadal-Medvedev played in the thrilling final of the Australian Open earlier this year which saw Nadal lift his 21st Men’s Grand Slam title, Medvedev,soon to be world number one,got to know the news on Thursday after he started to receive congratulatory messages.

He said,”It’s not easy to play a match when you get this news during the day.’’

“The first goal for me was to still win today because I’m here to try to win every match I play. But it’s definitely some great news,” Medvedev added.

Cameron Norrie will take on world number four, Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second semi-final of the Mexican Open on Saturday.
