Bangladesh moved to the top of the ICC World Cup Super League on Friday as they beat Afghanistan by 88 runs in the second One-Day International of the three-match series at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.
This win took Bangladesh to 100 points from 14 games in the Super League, meaning that they surpassed England, who have 95 points in 15 matches. Afghanistan currently have 60 points in eight matches with six wins and two losses. Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan, after the second ODI, expressed his delight in Bangladesh reaching the top of the Super League points table.
“Of course, I am happy. There was a lot of news in the media about us reaching the top if we win. I am very happy,” he told the media after the match.
Each team are awarded 10 points per win and will play 24 matches in total. The top seven teams of the Super League, along with hosts India, will qualify for the 2023 ICC World Cup.
Before the start of the series, Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo said that he did not worry about the Super League points table or 30 points.
“There are a lot of matches left. We have to play 24 matches and have played only 13. Our focus is on tomorrow’s (Friday) match,” Domingo had told the media on Thursday.
“Every single match is really important for us. We shouldn’t lose our hope just because we lost the series. We are still looking for ten points so we will try our best in the next game. We still have a lot of matches left to qualify for the World Cup,” he said.
