Uefa is in talks with its lawyers to terminate a profitable contract with one of its major sponsors,Gazprom after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Uefa has already stripped Russia from hosting the Uefa Champions League 2022 final which was scheduled to be hosted by the Gazprom Arena.
Defending European Champions Chelsea FC,owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abromovich,who has close ties to Vladimir Putin,also issued a club statement on Sunday.
“The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace.”the statement read.
Roman Abromovich pulled himself away from the ownership of the club in statement safeguarding the club from any sanctions. This decision came after talks about sanctions against Abromovic were circulated.
“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.
Gazprom,the Russian state-owned energy giant,has been in contract with Uefa since 2012 and is the official commercial partner of the European organization.
Uefa signed a new deal with Gazprom last May in which it will receive around 33.5 million pounds per year through the deal.
