Former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel has been appointed as the power-hitting coach of Bangladesh national team on Tuesday.
Morkel, who retired in January 2019, will be working with Bangladesh national team for the three-match ODI series against South Africa and has joined the Tigers camp at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Bangladesh Cricket board was looking to integrate a specialist power-hitting coach after the Tiger’s dismal batting performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
BCB’s Cricket Operations chairman, Jalal Yunus was hopeful about Morkel’s inclusion for this particular role.
He said, “Albie is very experienced and I hope that the batsman can benefit from his inclusion. He will be with us for the ODI series. We will see how it goes and then decide for the future.”
Team director Khaled Mahmud Sujon explained Morkel’s inclusion and said,“We have included Morkel for four to five days primarily to help the batsmen prepare for the ODI series. He has a lot of experience when it comes to power-hitting and the head coach also wanted to have him here”, he said from South Africa. Since his retirement, he has worked as the assistant coach of Namibia national cricket team.
Bangladesh will play a three-match ODI series against South Africa, as part of the ODI Super League. The Tigers will play their first match on Friday and the next two matches will be on March 20 and 23.
