Bangladesh produced a brilliant performance on the fourth day of the Durban Test to bowl South Africa out for 204 in their second innings, but an early collapse meant they lost three wickets for just 11 runs, leaving them needing 263 runs in the final day to claim their first-ever Test win over the Proteas.
Bangladesh, who had conceded a 69-run lead after their first innings, started the day 75 runs behind with South Africa still unscathed.
But three wickets from Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Ebadot Hossain, along with a couple from Taskin Ahmed allowed them to set a target under 300 for themselves.
But Keshav Maharaj dismissed Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Mominul Haque early, and Shadman Islam was dismissed by Simon Harmer, leaving the Tigers at 11-3 at stumps.
South Africa started the day well as openers Dean Elgar and Sarel Erwee put together 48 runs. The stand was broken when Ebadot Hossain trapped Erwee LBW for eight. The decision was initially not given, but Bangladesh reviewed it, and the decision was overturned.
Protea skipper Elgar picked up his second fifty of the match, but he rode his luck to get there as he was dropped twice. First by Najmul Hossain Shanto at first slip off Miraz on 34, and then on 43 by Yasir Ali Chowdhury off Ebadot.
Elgar put together a 68-run stand with Keegan Petersen, seeming to take the game away from Bangladesh. But Taskin, who is suffering from a shoulder injury, trapped him LBW for 64. It was given not out again, but after a successful review from Bangladesh, Elgar had to go.
Next to go was Petersen as Mahmudul took a sharp catch at short leg off Miraz’s bowling to send the right-handed batsman back, before a brilliant from Yasir sent back Temba Bavuma (4).
Bavuma edged a delivery from Ebadot, and Yasir, at first slip, dived to his left and grabbed a stunning catch with his outstretched left hand.
Kyle Verreynne (6) was also dismissed by a brilliant catch as Shadman took a blinder at silly point with his left hand off Miraz’s bowling.
Wiaan Mulder (11) tried to drive Miraz, and Yasir took another catch at first slip before Taskin produced a brilliant nip-backer to trap Maharaj (5) LBW.
Ryan Rickelton (39*) tried to push the South African lead forward but ran out of partners. Harmer (11) was dismissed trying to take a third, and substitute fielder Nurul Hasan Sohan’s direct hit caught him short.
Lizaad Williams went for a diamond duck as he was run out trying to steal an extra run, and then Ebadot’s reverse swing got the better of Duanne Olivier (0) as the South African quick was trapped LBW.
