Bangladesh left-arm spinner Mosharraf Hossain Rubel passed away on Tuesday at 5 PM at a private hospital in Dhaka.
He fell ill in the afternoon and was taken to the hospital, where the doctors declared his death. His passing away was confirmed by his wife. He was 40 years old at the time of his passing.
Rubel, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour, battled through the illness since 2019.
After being diagnosed in 2019, he received treatment in Singapore. He was given 24 sessions of chemotherapy as doctors managed to remove the cancerous tumour in surgery. But another tumour emerged in November 2021 and he had to be hospitalised. He also visited India for treatment in February.
His health declined in March and he was admitted to a private hospital in Dhaka, where he had to be admitted to the ICU. But his health had improved in recent days and he was taken home on Friday.
His Namaz-e-Janaza was held at 10 PM on Tuesday at the BCB Office premises at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.
Rubel, who played five One-Day Internationals for Bangladesh, last played in the Bangladesh Premier League in 2019 for the Comilla Victorians.
He made his international debut in 2008 against South Africa, taking one wicket in the three-match series. He was dropped and made his international comeback after eight years in 2016 when Bangladesh faced England at home.
In a career that spanned nearly two decades, Rubel was a regular face in the domestic circuit.
A seasoned veteran in first-class cricket, he scalped 392 wickets in 112 matches, with the best bowling figure of 9-105.
He featured in 104 List-A matches, taking 120 wickets, and played in 56 Twenty-over matches, picking up 60 wickets.
Bangladesh Cricket Board and the cricketing fraternity extended their condolences and sympathies toward
his family.
