Mushfiq to skip WI tour for Hajj

Wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim will miss out on the upcoming West Indies tour of the Bangladesh cricket team as he will perform the hajj, the annual rituals for Muslims at Mecca in July.

Jalal Yunus, chairman of the cricket operations committee at the Bangladesh Cricket Board told the media that Mushfiq had been granted leave for hajj during the first Test match of the ongoing two-match series against Sri Lanka at Chattogram,

“ Mushfiq lodged his leave application more than a month ago. At that time he said that there was a matter of quota for pilgrims from Bangladesh and he was not sure about the final selection. But eventually, his name came up on the pilgrim’s list. We have granted him leave during the Chattogram Test,” Jalal told the media.

Bangladesh cricketers are likely to leave for the Caribbeans on June 6 where the Tigers will play two Test matches, three One Day Internationals, and two Twenty 20 Internationals.

The two Tests are scheduled at the start of the tour, the first Test is likely to start on June 16 at Antigua. The second Test is scheduled to start at Saint Lucia on June 24.

Both the Test matches are part of the ICC World Test Championship.

Mushfiq, the first from Bangladesh to reach 5000 Test runs will be missed dearly in the last away Test series for the Tigers in this year’s WTC cycle, thinks Jalal,

“Certainly there will be a big deficit in terms of experience. West Indies tour is a tough one and he is a very experienced batsman. But when it comes to hajj, as Muslims we can’t deny someone. Hopefully, he will come back stronger after performing the holy pilgrimage”, said the BCB director.
