Kings breeze past Rahmatganj

Defending champions of the Bangladesh Premier League, Bashundhara Kings, extended their lead at the top of the table as they breezed past Rahamatganj MFS 2-0 in Munshiganj on Tuesday.

With this win, Kings now have 41 points from 16 games, nine points ahead of second-placed Abahani Ltd. On the other hand, Rahamatganj are loitering at 10th with 10 points, only two points above the relegation zone.

In Munshiganj, Kings were in control from the very start as they were facing relegation-battling Rahamatganj. But despite chances, they were finding it hard to score, until Rahamatganj goalkeeper Ziaur Rahman handed them an advantage.

After Nuha Marong was sent clean through, Ziaur came out of the box to stop him. But Nuha went for the chip, and despite being outside his box, Ziaur saved it with his hand and was sent off.

From the resulting free-kick, Kings midfielder Miguel Figueira completely outfoxed the substitute goalkeeper Rakibul Hasan Tushar to hand his side the lead in the 36th minute. While the obvious target was the far post, Miguel went for the near one and caught Tushar cold as the ball hit the net.

Two minutes later, their skipper Robson Robinho doubled Kings’ lead. After some good work on the right wing from Rimon Hossain, his pass found Robson in the box, and the Brazilian dummied a defender, before dispatching a right-footed strike to score.

Kings tried to increase the score for the remainder of the game, but it ended 2-0 as both teams failed to score in the second 45.

In the other match of the day, Sheikh Russell KC stunned Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to win 3-1.

Hemanta Vincent Biswas took Sheikh Russell ahead in the 24th minute in Dhaka, but Otabek Valizhonov brought Sheikh Jamal back. Sheikh Russell, though, went into half-time leading as Didier Brossou scored in the first minute of stoppage time.

In the 87th minute, Mannaf Rabbi made it 3-1 for Sheikh Russell, sealing the result for them.

This win took Sheikh Russell to 18 points from 16 matches, keeping them at eighth, while Sheikh Jamal stayed at third with 30 points from the same number of matches.
