England’s newly-appointed captain Jos Buttler was expectedly frustrated after their 10-wicket hammering by India in the first One-Day International of the three-match series on Tuesday as he said that they came third in a two-horse race.
Batting first, England lost five wickets for just 26 runs and were bowled out for 110, courtesy of Jasprit Bumrah’s six-wicket haul.
In reply, India broke no sweat in chasing that meagre total down as they took only 18.4 overs to reach victory. Skipper Rohit Sharma hit an unbeaten 76 off 58 deliveries, while Shikhar Dhawan scored 31 off 54 balls.
After the match, Buttler expressed his disappointment implying they were not even in the fight.
“It's a very tough day. We came third in a two-horse race. It's tough to take,” he said.
But yet, the new captain spread the message that there was no need for caution.
“India bowled fantastically well, and we didn't manage to deal with that as well as we'd have liked. You look at the names of the guys in there. They are some of the best players we've had.
“So [there is] certainly no need to panic at all. There's not much time to dwell on it either, so it will be a positive to get back out there and put things right on Thursday,” the wicketkeeper-batsman said.
Bumrah, who took a brilliant 6-19, said after the match that this might have not been the best he has bowled in ODIs, despite it being his best figures.
“I don't look at end results and judge my bowling. There have been instances where I have bowled so much better than this and not got wickets,” he said.
Buttler was all praise while talking about Bumrah.
“He has an incredibly high level of skill. He creates an angle but still has a phenomenal wrist to move the ball both ways from that angle to both right and left-handers.
"He produces tough angles and does it at high pace. As a package that is very good,” the England skipper said.
The second ODI between the sides will be at Lord’s today.
