Uttar Baridhara overcame a two-goal deficit against Chattogram Abahani on Wednesday to achieve a 2-2 draw in the Bangladesh Premier League, earning another valuable point in their bid for survival in the country’s top flight.
With this draw, Baridhara now have 14 points from 20 games and sit 10th on the points table, occupying the spot just above the relegation zone.
Two other relegation contenders, Muktijoddha SKC and Swadhinata KS, have 12 and nine points respectively, and both have played a game less.
In that match in hand, Muktijoddha will face a tough challenge as they will face Mohammedan SC today, while Swadhinata will face relegation-battling Rahamatganj MFS, who currently have 15 points from 19 matches.
At the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Stadium in Gopalganj, Baridhara were hoping for three points to boost their survival hopes, but it took a big hit in the first half as they were 2-0 down by the first half.
Forward Sakhawat Hosen opened the scoring for Chattogram Abahani in the 10th minute, and in the 37th minute, midfielder Arifur Rahman doubled their lead.
But after the break, Baridhara came back strong as they took only five minutes to equalise. It was their Uzbek recruit Saiddoston Fozilov who halved their deficit, and in the 78th minute, Arif Hossen completed the comeback to make it 2-2.
Despite their inspirational comeback this round, they will have to hope for some more miracles in the coming rounds to keep their place in the league as they will face Saif Sporting Club and Dhaka Abahani in their last two matches of this league campaign.
