Bangladesh got off to a winning start in the group stage of the Table Tennis team event of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 on Friday.
The team won their first three matches, including the doubles game, taking an unassailable 3-0 lead to go through.
In the doubles contest, Ramhimlian Bawm and Mohutasin Ahmed Ridoy won against Fijians Jai Chauhan and Stephen Reilley in 7-11, 5-11, and 4-11 to win by 3-0 set points.
In the latter singles match-ups, Mohammad Rifat Sabbir won 3-0, 8-11, 11-13, and 6-11 as he beat Fijian Vicky Wu, while Ridoy took the match 3-0 against Reilley as he won 1-11, 3-11, and 6-11.
The swimmers, on the other hand, had to see the other side of the coin, with Mahamudun Nabi Nahid coming in eighth in the heat of the Men’s 50m Butterfly event. The swimmer had a split time of 26.25 and a gap of 2.04. In the Women’s 50m Breaststroke event, Mst Morium Akter stood 5th amongst seven participants in the heat with a split time of 37.90 and a gap of 1.39.
It was heartbreak for the gymnasts on Friday as they led the table initially in Subdivision-1 with a cumulative point tally of 100.600 but slipped down to third after the conclusion of the subdivision.
In the floor apparatus final, Ali Kader stood ninth with 11.800 points, while Abu Saeed Rafi and Shishir Ahmed placed 15th and 16th with 10.050 and 9.100 points.
In the Pommel Horse final, Rafi and Shishir occupied the last two places at 16th and 17th with 7.00 and 2.100 points. In Vaulting, Ali Kader stood 6th with 13.375 points, while Rafi and Shishir were 9th and 10th.
Shishir and Rafi were 13th and 14th in Parallel Bars with 6.500 and 5.900 points, and the former stood 11th in Horizontal Bar with 2.950 points.
