Bangladesh boxer Sura Krishna Chakma faced a heart-breaking exit from the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Friday as he was ruled out with high blood pressure.
Sura, who was supposed to face Elia Rokobuli from Fiji on Friday, failed to pass his medical test with high blood pressure earlier in the morning and thus was disqualified.
Mohammed Shafiqur Rahman, the physician of the Bangladesh contingent at the Birmingham Games, said that Sura’s blood pressure was tested twice, but came out heightened on both occasions.
“He is unlucky. The doctors found out high blood pressure during his routine check-up in the morning. Then he was given rest for 15-20 minutes, but his blood pressure did not come down,” Shafiqur said.
He added, “It started to come down after an hour and came back to a normal level. But according to the rules, you have to pass the medical test in time, which he didn’t.”
Sura, who later watched his event, light welterweight, was expectedly heartbroken but explained that it happened because he didn’t sleep properly the previous night.
“I didn’t have any problems after I went to give my medical test after breakfast. But the doctors found high blood pressure. They didn’t permit me to play after it came out heightened after the second test. But it came back to normal after a little while. Now I’m watching my event with a broken heart. If this is not bad luck, then what is? I was not a bit nervous. Maybe it happened because I did not sleep properly last night,” he said.
