Sprinter Sumaya Dewan achieved her personal best but failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the 100-meter sprint of the Birmingham Commonwealth games on Tuesday.
Sumaya finished the race in 12.42 seconds, the personal best of the two-time national champion. But that was not enough to take Sumaya to the next round as she finished seventh out of seven sprinters in heat three of the women’s 100-meter sprint.
Among 48 sprinters who finished their races, Sumaya came 42nd. She took 1.43 seconds more than Nzubechi Grace Nwokocha from Nigeria, who finished first with a timing of 10.99 seconds.
In Men’s 100-Meter sprint, Imranur Rahman failed to achieve his personal best and was unable to qualify despite coming third in his Heat on Tuesday. The sprinter finished his race in 10.46 seconds. In the overall tally, Imran was ranked 33rd among 70 sprinters who finished the race.
Imran earlier represented Bangladesh in the World Athletics Championship, where he cleared the preliminary heat but could not participate in the next round due to a groin injury. The UK-born athlete previously finished his races in 10.22 seconds and 10.32 seconds in London. If he could replicate those performances in Birmingham, he might have earned a position in the semi-finals.
The last athlete to qualify for the next round had a timing of 10.39 seconds.
In swimming, Asif Reza participated in the Men’s 50M freestyle and came eighth in his heat with a timing of 24.67 seconds. Out of 71 swimmers, Asif finished in the 44th position.
Today, Table Tennis players from Bangladesh will compete in both Men’s and Women’s categories. In Men’s singles, Mohutasin Ahmed Ridoy, Rifat Sabbir, and Ramhimilian Bawm will play their respective matches while in Women’s singles, Sonam Sultana Soma and Sadia Rahman Mou will play their matches.
