Bangladesh on verge of first success

Bangladesh are on the verge of first success in the Islamic Solidarity Games 2022 in Konya, Turkey as the women archers have made it to the finals.

Tomorrow Bangladesh will face hosts Turkey in the gold medal match of the women’s compound archery where the winner will take gold and the loser will get silver.

Archery has always been a promising sport for Bangladesh in various international games. In the recently completed Commonwealth Games at Birmingham, Archery was not included, and Bangladesh returned empty-handed as the shooting event was also not there.

In Konya, range shooting is unavailable, but archery is, creating the window for a medal. There were only 10 participants in the women’s compound bow event, and out of them, only Bangladesh and Turkey had three archers to form teams.

Therefore, the team event will take place between Bangladesh and Turkey on August 17, the winner will be awarded the gold medal, and there will not be any bronze medal.

Roksana Akter, Shamoli Ray, and Puspita Zaman will represent Bangladesh. In the qualification round, Roksana placed 5th, while Shamoli placed 6th. Puspita earned 8th place.

Skeet shooting is not widely practised in Bangladesh. Yet, two shooters participated in the Islamic Solidarity Games. Noor Uddin Selim become 30th out of 34 participants with 106 points while S M Sabbir Hassan scored one less than him and became 32nd.

In Swimming, Asif Reza from Bangladesh got eliminated in the heat but he clocked his best timing in 50 M freestyle swimming abroad. Asif finished his turn in 24.61 seconds.
