Bangladesh eye semis ahead of Maldives clash

Bangladesh Under-17 national football team won their opening game in the U17 SAFF Championship 2022, thrashing hosts Sri Lanka 5-1 at the Racecourse International Stadium in Colombo on Monday.

The boys in red and green will now look to cement a place in the semis of the tournament by winning against Maldives today at the same venue.

Ahead of the Maldives encounter, head coach and technical director of the Bangladesh team, Paul Smalley, said that he was pleased with the performance but felt that the boys left a few unfinished chances on the field.

“I’m very pleased with the performance of the players. They adhered to our game plan, which was extremely pleasing and refreshing. We need to be more clinical in front of goal because I thought we created a lot of chances without really punishing the opposition,” he said on Tuesday.

The players spend most of Monday in recovery sessions and were later called into a team meeting, where they discussed tactics against the Maldives.

As many as four players were on the scoresheet for Bangladesh on Monday but despite the five-star performance, Smalley hinted at making a few changes citing tactical reasons.

“Firstly, we’ve done a review on our game against Sri Lanka. We adjusted all the same in our preparation for our game against the Maldives. We’ve got one or two changes we need to consider and put into place. We are looking forward to the game,” he said.
